I don't even have to explain this project, just watch the video below, what a genius idea, more cities should do this. Big ups to el primo Alfonso "Kiko" Dominguez, founder of Popuphood and all the other homies involved in this project, so proud of Oakland right now... Shhhhaaauuuww!!!

Grand opening is this Friday Dec. 9th from 12-9pm, the farmers market will be happening all morning until 3pm also, so make it a day of fun the Old Oakland way... See you there homies!!!

The POPUPHOOD is a new urban initiative and small business incubator revitalizing Oakland, block by block. This is an innovative strategy for breathing new life into the city’s retail sector in downtown’s hip, historic Old Oakland neighborhood with a grand opening celebration Friday, December 9, 2011.

This short film documents the founders and participants of POPUPHOOD, and was created by Oakland photographer Eva Kolenko in hopes of introducing their inspiring stories to others and in some way improve the community in which she lives and loves.

POPUPHOOD retailers include: Manifesto Bicycles, Marion and Rose’s Workshop, Sticks + Stones, Piper + John General Goods, Turtle and Hare,

and Crown Nine.

I can't wait for artist Mitsy Avila Ovalles solo art show this Thursday, November 10th at Cukui in San Jo, Califas... The boo and I are huge fans of her work, she has a dope style, I love everything she makes... you must check out her website, she don't mess around!!!

Mitsy creates amazingly painted artifacts of Mexican, Chicano and American pop culture, drawing inspiration from a deep pool of imagery including b-list celebrities, sports, and pop music, as well as animal and consumer iconography. Her paintings are deeply layered and richly textured and often presented as part of larger murals and installations that include an array of narrative and personal artifacts, yet speak of a common cultural, generational and gender experience.

MItsy Ávila Ovalles was born in San José, California where she still lives and works. She received a BFA from the local university. Since then she has shown widely across the Bay Area, including FIFTY24SF, White Walls and Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco. Tropico de Nopal in Los Angeles and internationally at Lart23tres in Mexico City. Ovalles has also created album artwork, logos and designs for various clients.

San Francisco, CA – On Thursday, November 3 2011, Peek Gallery proudly presents LOW LIFE, a photography series by photographer & artist, Trevor Traynor. The opening reception will feature motion visuals by John Coyne and live deejays playing low rider oldies.

Trevor Traynor has spent years documenting hip-hop culture, having shot everyone from Pete Rock, T.I., KrsOne, E-40, N.E.R.D., Redman, Mos Def and so many more. But after a chance encounter with a Lowrider car club, Traynor has now turned his lens toward this historic subculture. Last Cinco de Mayo he jumped in the back of a flan colored 69 Buick Skylark convertible and documented his first cruise. Capturing what he notes as "the passion and pride" that come with living in the Lowrider culture, Traynor accurately depicts the owners and their families in a way that is only deserving of the iconic culture that they are a part of. Continuing to research the different chapters and car clubs throughout the country, Traynor takes his talent of documenting the rawness of the open road and brings the "low life" into the public eye, in all its breathtaking yet forthright nature. Trevor elaborates, “My goal is to showcase the riders and their cars, the passion and the pride that are a part of low rider living."

In addition to Trevor’s limited edition prints, a limited run of LOW LIFE wood engraved pins, stickers, and posters will be available. Not to mention a handful of car club appearances that will make the opening reception of LOW LIFE truly memorable.

This Thursday, October 20th will be the book release party for my homegirl Amanda Lopez new book "Girls Got Kicks"... the book was a collaboration between Miss Lopez and Lori Lobenstein of Female Sneaker Fiend. They have been traveling the country for different book release parties, and they're finally coming to SF, held at Dark Side Initiative sneaker store from 5-8pm. El Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, provides a way for people to embrace the beauty of life and to honor the spirits of the dead. Intricate, traditional altars and complex art installations created by more than 80 Bay Area artists from a breadth of cultural backgrounds are on display in Illuminations: Dia de los Muertos 2011. Altars and installations range from deeply personal to political and many invite contribution or interaction from visitors.

Attend the opening reception ($10 suggested donation) on Friday, October 7 from 6PM to 9PM to enjoy music, interactive performance and the unveiling of over 30 altars and installations. The evening includes a special performance by Herbert Siguenza, of Culture Clash fame. Siguenza will perform and live paint as renowned artist, Pablo Picasso.

Ahhhh, there's so many things going on this Friday, Oct. 7th... I wish I could be at five places at once. One place I will be for sure is at Era Art Bar here in Oakland for the Chicano Batman show!!! El primo Kiko is co-owner of Era, and a few months back the boo introduced him to Chicano Batman, and of course he thought they were the bomb.com, so he booked them for his b-day party this Friday... I'm beyond excited, it's gonna be hella tight!!! The homies, and Latin Soul Brothers, Joe Quixx and Wonway Posibul will be spinning the jams all night... Shhhhaaaauuuwww!!!

Hell Yeah, It's finally here!!! This Saturday, Aug. 6th is the opening reception for my homie Felipe R. Vazquez's solo photography show at Secret Sidewalk Art Gallery. I've been waiting months for this show, and I'm hella proud and happy for him! Felipe and I have been working together for a few years now, and he has taken some of my favorite pictures of me. He's a young talented photographer, and a down-ass homie who's definitely showing peeps what the Califaz Culture is all about...

THE DEATH OF RADIO BANDIDO: A CHICANO MYSTERY

I need your help!!! My homie, filmaker Pepe Urquijo is making a documentary about a friend of his Oscar Gomez, an Oldies DJ from UC Davis in Sacramento, Califas who was mysteriously killed in 1994. Please take a look at the trailer below...

Here is where you can help... the project is in need of funds to help finish the film, they have 9 days to raise a little over $18,000 in order to fulfill their KickStarter goal of $22,000. I know, I know we are in an economic crisis, and unemployment is high but I'm pretty sure you can spare a few bucks, donations start at $1, that means you can donate a few bucks or more if you can afford it only by not buying a soda today, or buying one less drink at the club tonight, or instead of spending $15 at the theater to watch some stupid mainstream movie you can donate to this film. Awww man, this movie hits home... and not only for me but for so many Brown folks trying to have a better life in the good ol' US of A (Aztlan). All these fucked up laws like SB1070 try to make it so hard for us to work, go to school, to drive, to travel, and pretty much makes racial profiling legal... the seemingly overwhelming anti-immigration sentiment going around can feel scary, but the reality is only a small percentage of the US population feels this way, the bad thing is they have the money and resources to spread the hate around. What we have to do is not fall victim to these assholes, and keep fighting for our rights as human beings, and as rightful residents of this land. Don't be scared, because you know that deep inside these racist jerks are more scared than us... scared that our numbers are growing and we will soon take back what's ours. Try to stay out of trouble, try to break the stereotypes, show them wrong, let them see that we work harder than they do, that we live honest lives, and that we have compassion for people as they should too... and always speak up for injustices, we have a voice and a strong one at that... This Saturday!!! Please come out and support the 2011 San Jose State University Chicano Commencement by attending their car show in efforts to fundraise for their graduation ceremony... Last year my lil sister was part of the Chicano Commencement as she graduated from SJSU, and let me tell you, it was one of the best nights our family shared together... They had a beautiful ceremony, we got to hang out with Dolores Huerta as she was the honorary speaker, and we got to dance to La Sonora Dinamita!!! These students work really hard all year round to fundraise and put this ceremony together for their families and friends, and they do the event planning too!!!

Please try to make it out, even if it's just for a little while... these students really need your help, and they deserve to celebrate their accomplishments and hard work... plus who doesn't love a car show on a sunny Saturday afternoon!!! See you there!!!

SCARED STRAIGHT

I like watching movies about prison life... I think I just like to scare myself straight. Nowadays you can land en la pinta for any little fucking reason, like smoking herb... can you believe that?! It's so stupid!!! Prisons are nothing but a business, there's whole towns making a living off these inmates... the more people are incarcerated the more money they make, it's like modern day slavery I tell ya! Here are a few of my favorite films about la pinta (prison) in no specific order...

The film "Felon" shows just how easy it is to land in prison... even when you are a good guy trying to make an honest living for you and your family shit can happen that will turn your life upside down.

Before there was Will Smith and Martin Lawrances' "Bad Boys" there was Sean Penn's "Bad Boys"... it doesn't take place in a state prison but in a juvenile facility, but who are we kidding most juvenile offenders will most likely end up en la pinta, sad but true... that's just how this fucked up system works. I also really like this film cuz "Bob" (Esai Morales) from La Bamba is in it and he's such a hottie.

"American Me" and "Blood In Blood Out" are a given, duh! Don't talk to me if you haven't seen these film, for reals... even my moms has seen them. They're on my top 5 film list ever... I can quote them all day. I'm more than fascinated with the history of the Mexican Mafia... like it or not it's part of our Mexican American history, I'm not saying we gotta repeat this way of thinking or am I in any way condoning their actions, just know it exist and educated yourself on the issues that have caused the Mexican Mafia to come about.

I really enjoyed watching "A Prophet," it's been compared to "The Godfather" and I'd have to agree to an extend, except this takes place in Europe... I'm always interested in other countries prison systems, how they work, and the different prison gangs that inhabit them.

"Animal Factory" is a good one, and Danny Trejo a.k.a. Machete is in it... watch it!!!

Hummm, How do I describe "Bronson?" It's like prison art, a must see!!!

Okay, this next one is not really a prison film but it kinda is... I mean they're incarcerated, they don't have their freedom, and if you're not crazy when you get to prison you most likely will be by the time you get out. Besides the characters in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" are probably more sane than any of us out here, they're just a little misunderstood. It's one of my favorite books/films ever!

Moral of the story (there's no story just videos): Don't get caught up boo, cuz once you're in the system it's really hard to get out, plus you don't wanna be anybody's little puppet do ya!!!

"Cultura & Old School Ways" will speak of the cultural heritage, barrio life, and cultural pride of ‘Cholo’ artists. The term "cholo" usually indicates a person of Mexican or Mexican-American descent who is associated with American youth movements such as the "lowrider" subculture, or the hip hop scene in general.

Today I cleaned my backyard... spent all day in the sun, bending over and pulling weeds. I would stop to rest here and there cuz my back was killing me and my hands were full of blisters... then I felt it, the tears wanting to come out. It wasn't because of my back or blisters, it was because for a minute there I was really tired and all I could think of was how farm workers, gardeners, and all the hardworking Raza could do this on a daily and never complain... and here I am crying over a few blisters. It's moments like these that make me wake the hell up and just be thankful for every person who works really hard to put food on the table for their children, and who fight on the daily against injustice with integrity and pride just like Cesar Chavez did, and still does through all of us who keep his spirit and legacy alive. Today we remember him and celebrate his life... Long Live Cesar Chavez!!!

Sixteen years ago today Selena was taken from us, what a sad day that was... there is not one day I don't think or talk about her, so I would like to take a minute to honor her memory. I know it might sound weird but I really do think she's my guardian angel. When ever I feel like life has given me too much to handle, or I'm feeling all sad girl, all I have to do is play some of her music and somehow all is good once again... and you best believe I have a Selena altar in my house, the two ladies I pray to on a daily are Mi Virgen de Guadalupe and Santa Selena... so on this day I pray that she's happy in heaven and can feel all the love we are sending her... We Hella Miss You and Love You Selena!!!! Anything for Salinas!!!

and like Selenas dad in the movie (Edward James Olmos) likes to say...

I really want to see the movie "Salvando Al Soldado Perez" (Saving Private Perez) when it comes out... it's refreshing to see films coming out of Mexico that are not just depressing, or hella political with no sense of humor... it shows a part of Mexican culture that not many in the U.S. are familiar with unless you live in a border town. Finally somebody making fun of Mexicans in an intelligent manner and not just using the same stereotypes... Welcome to Narcoladia!!!

The movie Lambada (1990) may be a bit cheesy but I still like it, in fact I love anything with Adolfo Quiñones in it! No, not really, but I do really really love him in Breakin' (1984) and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (1984). He's got moves for days...

Don't laugh at me, but the song below "Lambada" by Kaoma is one of those songs that will forever be embedded in my brain. I first heard it as a lil morrita, and let me tell you, this song makes me feel all sexy and steamy like I need to be dancing lambada with some hot vato on the beach, y zazzz you know what happens after that!!!

I'm not gonna front, I'm a J.Lo fan, I think she's a very smart ,hard working business woman, and she's a beautiful Latina... but that don't mean I have to love all of her music. Her new single "On the Floor" featuring Pitbull is kinda wack in my opinion... the only thing I love besides her outfits is the beat cuz it's straight Lambada, you be the judge, watcha!!!

It started with a makeup and hair demonstration and class by my homegirl Diana Cortez, followed by a fun lounge party where you could have a few drinks and shop for some dope make-up...

Los Boulevardos presents Cruise To The Lake 2011

Here it is. Mark your calendars! You're all invited to cruise out to Woodley Park (theres a lake somewhere around there) on Saturday March 5th. Its going to be a great time to celebrate the end of winter. The only thing we need is you and your cars! We'll have plenty of hotdogs, chips, and drinks on hand. But feel free to bring anything else you'd like to grill up.

The location is in the San Fernando Valley. Woodley Park in Van Nuys to be exact. The entrance to our lot is on Woodley. Same entrance as the Japanese Garden, but the lot is just off the street. Lower lot, not the one closer to Victory that faces the street. Take the Burbank Boulevard exit off the 405 and head west. Make a right on Woodley and go up less than a mile. Turn into the lot that has the sign for the Japanese Garden. Look for the ez ups and the Los Boulevardos banner.

Its a great spot with plenty of parking, picnic tables, and playground for the kids. Lots of grass. So bring the whole family. We'll be playing music all day. We will also be raffling off lots of some really cool stuff. A few art pieces and some other prizes. Details will be posted on raffle items in the weeks to come. We'll also be doing a 50/50 raffle.

There is no charge to get into the park and we dont charge a dime to get into our show or to eat our grub. Save your money for the raffle!! All proceeds of the raffle go to benefit the Veterans Hospital. Feel free to make donations in the form of thirts, undershirts, and socks as well. These guys need alot of that stuff. And it would be great to help them out and show our appreciation for their service.

So come on out and join us! Cruise your ride for a good cause. We hope to see you all there.
